9 Billion

If you are even remotely a football fan, you have been keeping up with the labor issues that are consuming the NFL right now. The latest collective bargaining agreement has expired and so now the owners, NFL and the players are arguing about how to move forward. The main sticking point is how to divide up 9 billion dollars. That is hard for me to wrap my mind around, 9,000,000,000. Just to be clear, no one is losing money in the NFL, the players are well paid, all the owners are millionaires.

From the outside it looks like a bunch of greedy children arguing over extra candy. I am not going to act like I understand all the arguments from both sides. But at some point the question has to be answered, how much is enough? Which leads to a discussion about needs versus wants. We rarely talk about how little we can live on, instead we talk about how much we want/need. I use the pronoun 'we', because we are in this together. I am no different. I drive a big truck that wastes too much gas, I have too many clothes, and shoes, I have a smart phone, etc. All of these things are undoubtedly luxuries, and things I could do with less of or without totally.

When we take stock of our lives we could all do with a lot less. So we must return to the issue at hand, what to do with 9 billion dollars. We could improve our schools. We could improve our health care system. We could improve....well too many things to list. The bottom line is that a lot of good could be done, and it just seems silly to squabble over football revenues when so many greater issues are at stake.
