I realized today, thanks to some out there in the cyber world that it has been over 11 days since my last post. So much for posting weekly, guess I should keep my resolutions to myself! Just kidding, I know I should be more diligent here. Also these ads on the right panel, I do not pick what goes up there. When I logged in a minute ago there was an ad for the Mormon church. I am not supporting them, someone else has control over that.
So I was reading a news story this afternoon and I had to pause and say...WHAT? So I re-read it, a few more times and just shook my head. You can read the story here if you like, but this is the gist of it. A guy is out drinking and driving with his step-daughter in the car with him. He has a nasty wreck, running his vehicle into a tree. He proceeds to leave the scene of the crime, do you remember the step-daughter in the car. He left her in the wrecked vehicle. She was trapped inside, the paramedics got her out but she later died at a local hospital.
It turns out that this guy has five previous DUI convictions. How self absorbed do you have to be go out drinking with a child in the car with you? How insane do you have to be to leave an injured, helpless, defenseless child in a wrecked car as you make your get away? The fish at my house cannot control their environment, I do. I choose when to feed them, I choose whether or not to change their water and filters. They are at my mercy.
Kids are the same way. They cannot control what food you provide for them, they cannot control the music you listen to or the habits you have around them. Parents, they are your responsibility. No amount of excuses and apologies will ever make up for the life that was lost because of this man's irresponsibility. Many of us may never make a fatal choice such as this man, but we do need to be aware that everything we do affects them.
