I am unsure why I am drawn to this show. I was not a fan of Simon, but I was not sure the show could make it without him. However, I find this new panel to be quite good. I think what draws me is the incessant need people have for the approval of others. Now I understand the immense nature of this event. Lives are changed forever through this and I get that. But come on, really? I do not mean to be mean about these contestants because I feel that they are a microcosm of humanity as a whole.
We seek approval and esteem in places that make no sense. Make no mistake that I am right there too. I constantly desire the approval and love of those who I should not care about. Let me make something clear...we should only seek the approval of God. The name "idol" is correct for this show, because success becomes our idol, approval becomes our idol, anything but what God offers us becomes our idol. It's not like what God is offering is less than what we seek in the world. In fact what God offers is so much more.
So why do we settle? Why do we give in to what satisfies only the flesh. The reality is that all but one on American Idol will be told no. All will have to walk out the door and feel like they failed. But with God we don't ever have to walk out the door and wonder if we are loved. We don't ever have to wonder if he cares, if he is there. We do not have to make idols out of our insecurities because God offers us all, we just have to accept it.
