Feeeeeeeelingssssss....

So my wife and I watch the news every morning as we are getting ready for our day. This morning an interview was shown with a woman who had an affair with a politician a few years ago. This affair was denied by all involved even after a baby was conceived. Now that the "truth" has come out and all the smoke is starting to clear everyone wants to tell their side of the story and be in front of the camera. The bad part is that every time this mistress gets in front of a camera she looks worse and worse. She remains unrepentant and proud of this extra-marital affair, mainly because they were/are in love.

She made a statement this morning that I believe is a bane on the society in which we live. She said, when asked if she felt bad about the affair and the subsequent break up of the politicians family, "I believe it was right because I followed my heart." She believed it was right because she followed her feelings and her feelings told her to do it. I am sorry, because I don't usually like to be this ugly, but that is just stupid.

If we do nothing in this life but follow our feelings we will get ourselves into a world of hurt. Imagine if you only made your children do the things that felt good to them. Some of them would never go to school, some would only eat candy and never healthy food. They would never brush their teeth or take a bath. We all have to do things that we do not feel like doing. We all also have to fight to not do things that we feel like doing.

I think that the bottom line is that feelings are not good guides for life. When I hear someone saying this is how I feel or this is just what I feel God leading me to do I cringe a little. I fully believe that God moves in our lives and causes us to feel things for his purpose, but God will never contradict himself and will never cause you to have a feeling that will lead you to sin. Feelings can be transformed for God because they are products of our hearts and minds. Listen to this:

"Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death- even death on a cross!" Philippians 2:5-8 (NIV)

There is something to be learned from Jesus and his interaction with God in the garden. Jesus implores for God to take this cup of suffering from him, because he knew it would not feel good, and yet he humbled himself. So if you want to talk about how you feel and how that guides your life I need to hear about how you have humbled yourself to God and his will. Because perhaps sometimes we are trying to humble God's will to our feelings. There are some things that we are going to have to do in God's service that are going to run counter-intuitive to our feelings. Then it will be a matter of humbling ourselves and accepting God's will.
