As I have been recovering from shoulder surgery I have been spending some time listening to and reading a good bit of news. I have been particularly fascinated lately the story about Nadia Bloom. You can read about Nadia's adventure here, briefly she was lost for several days in a Florida swamp and survived. Her survival was a wonderful surprise and so was how she was found. The authorities in Florida had been looking for days and were having no success when Nadia was found by a member of her church who was out looking by himself. From the moment he came out of the swamp with the girl he has maintained that God led him directly to her. He said he prayed and God pointed him to Nadia and he found her. What a fascinating story!
Now there are those who are doubters or cynics out there who will easily write this off and claim it was all a matter of coincidence. But he is insistent that God led him to her. I think many of us claim to pray regularly and fervently, but how many are this eager to stand up and be this insistent when God answers prayers. Maybe it is because when prayers are not answered like we want them to be we think God merely does not answer. So when something good and rare happens we yield to coincidence before we yield to God.
Often times we are less likely to attribute good to God because we do not want to look foolish or simple. Society has dictated for centuries that religion is for the simple who cannot handle life. We desire status and acceptance from those we respect, and often we respect those outside of religion so when we lean on God they roll their eyes. As time progresses we allow them to impact us and lessen our reliance upon God. I hope and continue to pray that God moves and works in his world, and I also pray that we will always be strong enough to give God the credit.
